TECHNICAL NOTES
The appearance and condition are poor. The lining is old and there are old tears in the paper, noticeably round the left eye and below the shoulder on the right. Some of the tears are patched at the back. The paint is very dark, with heavy restoration and discoloured and dark varnish. Previous recorded treatment: 1994, insecure paint consolidated, N. Ryder and S. Plender.
The DPG catalogues have been very reticent about this painting, as about DPG383 (q.v.). This could be a Flemish picture, or a picture made by a Flemish artist in England, or by a British artists inspired by or after a Flemish example. Like DPG383, it may be a tronie.1 It is not clear from which collection this picture came; it was one of several which were found in Dulwich College in 1890.
